- A Poem by Leslie Benton
As fast as any storm could drive,
Arrive in my heart you did
Breaking down all of the barriers
I swore to you could not be broken.
In a whirlwind of right and wrong
My soul married yours.
Even now, ten days past our parting
I feel your arms around me.
Ten days stolen from my vow to love you
And I can feel your lips gently brush my skin.
Ten days from the moment my heart died with you
I hear you whisper my name.
I shudder to think I could ever love anyone
as fiercely as I loved you.
Though my mind tells my heart
This isn’t so.
I see our lifetimes together
They wait for us on the horizon
Taunting, teasing, and bruising
The heart I’ve sworn over and over could not be broken again.
For my Jamie. May you rest in peace. I love you. 11/14/71 - 3/3/09
