As I can't actually send this form of this letter to the members of my church I thought I'd post it as a blog here before I clean it up a bit, make it a little nicer, and send it to my congregation. But this is how my heart feels. Thanks for reading.
It has come to my attention that in the past we have used pesticides (more specifically arsenic) to get ride of rodents which have gotten into our premises. I have found cubes in all three buildings. Today 6-2-2010 I had to bury a chipmunk. This pained me greatly and made me consider some things. As a parent, Pagan, Buddhist, and Unitarian, I am horrified by this because of the danger to our children and the lack of respect for life within a Unitarian community. This is damaging to the bond of the interdependent web of all life and does great harm to our animal friends who seek refuge at this universalist sanctuary. For all of these reasons and many more, the building and grounds chairman (myself) has decided that at no point during my term will we be using arsenic or any other poison, pesticide, herbicide, or chemical on these premises. Instead if there are any problems with "vermin" I will set humane traps or take the appropriate action to remove or deter any and all animal life that may get into our buildings.
I will also be planning a day to remove everything from the basement and the shed so as to find the last remnants of these poisons and properly dispose of them. If anyone is willing or wishing to help, I will GLADLY accept your support!
Thank you all so much;
Blessings and love!
