1000 years ago Europe was dominated by Christian hegemony, the Normans were bleeding the Saxons to death in Britain, the Americas were undiscovered by  Europeans and the Mongols hadn't yet entered the picture in Asia.  The printing press was centuries in the future and gunpowder was an unidentifiable dot on the future of mankind.  Plague sweeping across continents was somewhat common.  Slavery was almost universal and universally accepted and expected.  The only things in the air were birds and arrows.
