Is it true that John Denver wrote Rocky Mountain High after attending the first Rainbow Gathering in Colorado?
Been to a few gatherings, Michigan 83, California 84, Missouri 85, PA 86, NC 87 and more Nevada, Minnesota, Wyoming, and Kentucky. Lots of regionals too. Cochise Stronghold, High Creek, New Mexico, Montana, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Missouri. Worked at the first and second Love-n-ovens. Sat in the council that started All Ways Free.
Nowadays though, I'm a single dad in the middle of Iowa. I work a straight job and take care of my daughters and my brother who is blind. Every now and then some family comes through, usually riding the rails, and we always send them off with lots of love and kindness

Dale Hmmm... I think there's been some mischaracterization of what hippies are like:. I've met plenty of hippies who work, including doctors and lawyers.

Dale: My latest hippie friend is a military wife who does property management. They are just like you and me but try to live more harmoniously.

I'd been on the road for two years but had never heard of a Rainbow Gathering although I'd met the Love Family in Seattle, the Krishnas in Ft Lauderdale, and a few road dogs here and there. Me? I just traveled, trying to see everything, and my next destination was Quebec. I stopped at the Wedge Co-op in Minneapolis on my way there and found a Howdy Folks for the 1983 World Peace and Healing Gathering near Watersmeet, Michigan. It's good to be back among loving people like yourself, Peaceful Valley Walker. It's nice that you think you remember me. My memories are also a blur. One image stands out though, It's this dude sleeping peacefully on a rough pile of firewood like he was sleeping on eiderdown. I remember thinking, that must be some good acid. My first sweat lodge, the tasty peasant food, the singing. the passing of the feather, everyone shouting "Ho!", being held in a very large woman's embrace while standing on a raised mound in the middle of an open field during a lightning storm, and thinking, this is way to dangerous. Yes, a few things do come into focus. Love and peace to you, Brother.
