Hey Katie,
My friend who joined a community in TN for a bit got the best results by showing up at an event, hanging out afterwards during the clean up and in generally showing he was ready to be part of the family. He had done is research and knew they were in need of not only more members, but skills he had. Was trying to send this direct, but one must be "friend" to message.

i am serious about joining an intentional community, yet, it seems impossible to get a reply from any of them. Does anyone have suggestions on what i should be doing, saying, who i should be talking to? i have emailed acorn and east wind. i have no word from either. i have been very patient :(

If there was ever a time to shift priorities and "get intentionally communal" it was yesterday.  Gatherings and the adventure of travelling to meet new people is nice, but the short-term reality suggest getting practical within the spirit here and focusing on preparation.

Between the slowing economy here and abroad, the drought and trending technologies that has turned food into stuff they warned us about in "Soylent Green" and "1984", those that gather and prepare will be better prepared to weather any circumstance beyond their control. 

I am not paranoid, but am very concerned about depending on commercial and government infrastructure to provide enough clean water, healthy food and shelter in urban areas as soon as this winter. (If you trust the FDA and USDA, I have a bridge for sale and it comes with an island.)

As I watch, I applaud those who quietly prepare and offer space for those willing. It sure makes sense to me as I work on my sustainable mini farm in rural southern Illinois. Unfortunately my space is in the Illinois, where the overall attitudes are not connected with community, reality or progressive responsibility to create a sustainable living environment. Then we have this damn drought with a short term forecast that the heat will persist till the end of October (today 105 at 1PM). Right now further north and east, deeper in the forest and near glacial water supplies seems to be smarter. 

Love is a powerful thing to center on, but it needs to be wisely pressed into service behind intention and thought.
