About CALM

CALM is the tribe of people at the Rainbow Gathering who are entrusted with setting up public health and sanitation systems and with providing health care for Family members during the Rainbow Gatherings.

The CALM staff is made up of volunteers representing a broad range of healing modalities. Among our group are found licensed medical doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, certified homeopaths and naturopathic doctors, lay and nurse midwives, EMTs, social workers and mental health counselors, massage therapists, herbalists, Native American shamans and other spiritual healers. You do not need to be a formally trained “healer” to work at CALM. The Rainbow Gathering is a healing place and we are all at the Gathering to heal ourselves, the planet and, of course, each other. If you have love in your heart and an open mind, than you too can work at CALM.

We all work together, not just to fix the booboos and sunburn that people experience while living harmoniously in a national forest during a Rainbow Gathering. We do spiritual and emotional healings as well.

CALM is a workshop on how the various healing modalities can work in concert together to heal the body , mind and spirit of those at the Gathering. It is not unusual for an MD, an herbalist, a Reiki therapist and a chiropractor to all work together on a specific client to help with a healing. It is a place where practitioners teach each other about their various healing approaches. Personal ego trips are discouraged because healing energies and egos do not work well together.

Besides learning by doing, formal workshops are also offered. These may include such topics as herbal plant walks, body work, women’s health and midwifery and homeopathy. We invite and encourage people to offer these workshops as an opportunity to grow and share with each other.

CALM Council meets daily during the Gathering to democratically discuss issues which affect the efficient delivery of health care and to assess problems of sanitation on the Gathering in general. In these councils we share who we are and what we specifically do for healing modalities, discuss and develop treatment strategies for difficult to treat patients, and work on issues of quality control.

I have also recommended lemon juice for calcium carbonate stones; cranberry extracts for bladder infections; castor oil packs and creosote for lung congestion; castor oil packs for abdominal problems.

Some differences and experience:  For bladder infections, I stress cranberry capsules, which pack a punch of cranberry without the sugar.  Different dosages work on different people, so I just inform the caps come in different strengths.  For myself, I get the strongest ones.  For kidney infections, however, I get antibiotics.  Cranberry is not strong enough; and knocking it out fast is important.  It is also best to take strengthening herbs, uva ursi being one of the best.  Be careful with herbs called bearberry; different regions call different plants bearberry.  Any time taking an antib is time to also take a probiotic.   One of the biggest problems with antibiotics is they take all your good bacteria out with the bad.  After you finish a round, you are at risk for re-bound infection due to the fact you have no natural flora in at least the organ you are targeting.  Pro-biotics (strong yogurts to the refrigerated caps) taken during and after will help normalize your flora.  Would love to know how to knock out a kidney infection fast without antib's; feel free to share!  Got a link to tell more about asparagus therapy?

Re: Castor oil packs, I depended on them to pull bronchial congestion from my babies.  As children they have memories of mom putting oily flannel on their chests and keeping covered.  It worked on them and on me; and worked well.   As a tea, creosote cannot be beat at this.  Not many people these days will drink bad tasting teas; and in my practice, I try to offer people what they are willing to take/do.  But I ran across creosote syrup in a pharmacy once that worked well.  Now that I am back out west, will search out a recipe for this and make some.

Castor oil packs did not work for me on some large fibroid tumors; I used for a year, along with diet changes, and watched them continue to grow.  I like your addition of ginger to that; might have made the difference.  Stopped using the packs, and in this case, just waited those tumors out.  Docs wanted to cut 'em out, saying they were too large to expect to decrease much after menopause.  Lucky for me, they never hurt; or impinged on an organ (would have had to opt for surgery).  I looked pregnant during menopause years; but post-meno, docs were wrong, lost them almost entirely.  Surgery is not something to opt for as a cosmetic fix.  There can be longterm grief post any invasive surgery.  Many people struggle with adhesions the rest of their lives, with more surgeries to cut them out... a perpetual nightmare.

The function of the packs is to improve blood flow. Preliminary studies on castor oil packs done at the George Washington School of Medicine indicate that they improve immune system functioning.

We have "improved" on Edgar Cayce's use of castor oil packs by using ginger with it... with great success...have used it for kidney stones, gallstones (chronic conditions, not necessary for simple acute stones which respond so well to potato water), for various liver problems such as congestion, hepatitis, jaundice, even cirrhosis... of course for these "heavier" dis-eases this was only part of the protocol which was worked out with and through physicians...

We rub the cold-pressed castor oil over the upper abdominal area, after creating a decoction of the ginger root slices... We take a cotton cloth folded into four thicknesses, saturate it in the decoction, place it as reasonably hot as the patient can take it over the castor oiled area, cover this with a thick cotton towel or a sheet of plastic, wrap a blanket around it all to keep the heat in... sometimes even use a hot-water bottle between the towel and the blanket...keep it on while the client reclines, for about an hour. Ask the client to pay attention to thoughts, images and feelings that arise and if possible keep notes of these in a journal. the client is likely to feel "chemical-burning-like-sensations" in the liver as the actions begin... this disappears in minutes and then the healing has begun...
After the treatment, you can clean your skin with a solution of two teaspoons of baking soda dissolved in one quart of water.

Serious chronic cases have to do this once a day for a few days, then three times a week for 1 month, then once a week for 3 months...and the liver and gallbladder and kidneys all get strong and in the case of gallstones or kidney stones, after a few months no treatments are required, no stones are produced...

The flannel can be stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and used over again. Add extra castor oil as needed.

I haven't tried with with any diagnosed cancers though I would do so if presented with any abdominal cancer conditions.

Castor Oil Packs

Edgar Cayce endorsed abdominal castor oil packs as a home remedy for all types of problems involving lymph flow, such as:

Inflammation
Congestion
Constipation
Liver, kidney, and pelvic disorders

kidney stones:

This woman reported that the asparagus therapy also cured her kidney disease, which started in 1949. She had over 10 operations for kidney stones, and was receiving government disability payments for an inoperable, terminal, kidney condition. She attributes the cure of this kidney trouble entirely to the asparagus.

I was not surprised at this result, as The Elements of Materia Medica, edited in 1854 by a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, stated that asparagus was used as a popular remedy for kidney stones. He even referred to experiments, in 1739, on the power of asparagus in dissolving stones.

Q. I read a letter from someone who drank lemonade to prevent kidney stones. I've had kidney stones for six years. I've been through two lithotripsies and taken sodium bicarbonate for two years. One of the physician assistants told me a year ago to drink a shot glass of lemon juice right before bedtime. I've had two ultrasounds since then and no kidney stones show up. I just wish my urologist had told me this.

A. Kidney stones are extremely painful, so preventive measures are most welcome. Doctors sometimes prescribe potassium citrate to block the formation of kidney stones. Because lemon juice also contains citrate, doctors have considered lemonade therapy to prevent kidney stones (Journal of Urology, April 2007). This calls for one or two quarts of unsweetened or low-sugar lemonade per day.

Pure lemon juice before bedtime can be hard on tooth enamel. Be sure to rinse well!

A study was done a few years ago, stating that orange juice, or oranges were more efficient than lemons, or lemonade at preventing kidney stones.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE STUDY WE FOUND WAS CONDUCTED IN 1993. HERE IS THE ABSTRACT:

Effect of orange juice consumption on urinary stone risk factors.

Take the remedy every 12 hours until you feel a definite improvement in your general outlook and feelings or in the kidney action itself. At that point stop taking the remedy and do not repeat unless the improvement stops and the problems still exist. If after 5 days there has been no noticeable improvement, stop taking the remedy and wait one full week. At that time report back to me.

Here are some of the indications for the use of Eupatorium Purporeum Homeopathically prepared according to a couple of Materia Medicas I have on hand.

Look for frequent sighing and homesickness even, sometimes, when home or with family. There may be headaches (most often these will be left-sided), with a feeling of dizziness or as if falling to the side the headache is primarily on… may be worse from motion. May be abdominal pain after urination and may desire lemonade or cold drinks even when chilled or feverish. Often there will be a profuse discharge vaginally or a feeling as though the vulva is wet; may be pain in the left ovary. Even after urination the bladder is likely to feel full; there is most likely constant desire to urinate. The urinary stream seems smaller and/or less forceful than previous and the urine will often smell quite sweet. Look also for heaviness and dull pain in lower back.

Now I would not expect all of those symptoms to fit you. But if two or three do then you can be certain that the Homeopathic version is the way to go!

Just in case you are going to need to report back to me, the best thing you can do is keep a very careful accurate diary log. I need to know every single thing you eat or drink – quantity, quality, how prepared, what time of day. I want to know when you sleep, how long and how good was the quality of sleep. When you poop or pee – amount, time, color, easy or difficult, texture, whatever information you can provide.

If you come back to me after trying any or all of the above, we will probably have you do a short fast followed by a complete cleansing, a longer fast and then try again with some of the above. We will talk about the various choices in cleansing protocols and which would be likely to be best for you.

The homeopathic remedy named Eupatorium Purporeum is made from an herb called Gravel Root. as a homeopathic remedy it will be so diluted and yet the action so enhanced that it will have absolutely no side effects but will work extremely well to tone your kidneys. if you cannot obtain the homeopathic version but can access the herb itself, get or make a tincture and put 5-15 drops in a cup of water. this is a powerful herb and should be used according to the Rule of the Sixes which is to take the recommended dosage once a day for six days. then break for one day. do this for six weeks. then break for one week. if you need to continue, do so with the scheduled breaks for 6 six week sessions. then stop. if it hasn't completed the job by then it will not.

If you get the homeopathic version which can be ordered in a 30c potency from Washington Homeopathic Products or Standard Homeopathic Lab or Boiron Labs, listed in the order of my own preferences do not simply follow the directions on the label which are generic instructions and not exactly appropos for your specific needs. Rather, take 5 pellets or if they are super tiny take 10 pellets under your tongue without touching them with anything including your fingers… pour them into the bottle cap and from there into your mouth. They need to go under your tongue so they are absorbed sublingually. If you use Homeopathic remedies you must not do coffee of any kind… with or without caffeine. Not even coffee flavored ice cream!

how about addressing kidney problems and sharing info and approaches around... here is a convo I had with someone a while back... and btw it leaves out info about Horsetail, Homozone and the 3-leaf caper (crateva nurvala which has been has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.

(by the way surgery is seldom my recommended approach to kidney stones which are rather easily dissolved and passed by drinking potato water... which recipe I have shared with hundreds at Gatherings)

Now you have let me know that you want to know how to support and strengthen your kidneys because you had surgery to remove kidney stones once and since then your kidneys only work at about 65% capacity.

For sure you need to do a handful of cranberries (unsweetened if you can handle that, it is a bit bitter but not too bad) or the juice or tea once a day. Maybe forever!

Uva ursi which is often called Bearberry, is excellent tonic for the kidneys and urinary system, acts as a diuretic and astringent.

Black cohosh-2 parts, juniper berries-4 parts, nettles-4 parts, ginger root-1 part, parsley root (careful, do not eat drink or take the leaves with these other herbs)-3 parts and poke root-2 parts with comfrey-8 parts as the general herb, work well together as tinctures dropped into water and can be safely taken daily for up to several weeks. then quit for 2 weeks and then take again daily for up to several weeks. if there is no improvement then, contact me. some folks recommend Marshmallow Root as well, but due to the way this herb interferes with Potassium absorption I do not like to use it. If you cannot obtain or create alcohol tinctures take these herbs, cut them up in slivers and simmer them in water for about 60 minutes then drink one cup a day. The tea form will last refrigerated for a week and retain all medicinal properties. But I do not think you should reheat it out of the refrigerator but rather pour one cupful and let it sit to get room temperature.

Also be aware that the dietary advice I gave in the Kidney Stones information is even more important for you to follow as well as you can for as long as you can.

if you think you are drinking enough water for therapeutic purposes - much more than one normally might need, then look at your bowel movements: if you are constipated or if your stools are hard, sink to the bottom of the water in the toilet and if you have to strain enough that sometimes you get hemorrhoids then you are NOT getting enough water.
