I stood up and looked around.
it seemed everybody was passed out and laying on the ground.
The daze that clears and the soul asks why but you just can't find the answears so you don't reply.
I step over the lifelessness and ponder my everyday accurances.
I think to myself "What ever happened to mothers everyday assurances?"
Running through mazes, crossing bridges, painting white pickett fences, falling off that broken ladder, screaming on the rollercoaster gettin… Continue

a box of freedom,
instructions and rules.
as they distract you with jewels
bound to drown
as you lose
your selfish crown.
point and laugh
at those who warn.
treat them like
a bloody thorn
in the end
you shall see
no place to flee…

Bedsheet Memories – A Poem by Leslie Benton
The sky begs for my attention- a
tapestry of color
like stellar vomit, only
The sunset is painted not orange,
and reminds me of the day I
drummed for you.
I long for even a shred of your
to hold onto to the feel and
smell of you beside me.
I imagine the linens must still
smell of leather and jasmine… Continue

Recently, I have taken as my personal mantra the not very transcendent phrase, "I don't know." The list of things I feel unsure about seems to be steadily increasing. For instance, I don't know if our solipsistic* species will survive much longer, and sometimes I am not even sure how much I care. I don't know if Barack Obama is a warm- hearted leader who will unite people at a time of adversity, or the most… Continue

The last time we had a national gathering in Pennsylvania, I had the blessing of returning the following spring to sing at Bear Woman’s family reunion near Bradford.
We had lots of time to travel and we even revisited the gathering site on Bear Creek in the Allegheny Mountains. We visited Leeper, PA, my Moms’ family’s pioneer town, and we visited Cooks Forest and saw some of the local elk herd.
One of the highlights of my visit was the… Continue

- A Poem by Leslie Benton
As fast as any storm could drive,
Arrive in my heart you did
Breaking down all of the barriers
I swore to you could not be broken.
In a whirlwind of right and wrong
My soul married yours.
Even now, ten days past our parting
I feel your arms around me.
Ten days stolen from my vow to love you
And I can feel your lips gently brush my… Continue

I was camping at Kid Village a few summers ago on the western side of the Sawtooth Range. It was a beautiful day and I was looking for a place to sing my songs, when I encountered Faith.
Faith said, “Mikal, do you want to help me dig a shitter?”
I said, “No.”
A short while later, I was walking up the hill with Faith carrying shovels and picks. I cannot remember beginning the job, because the next thing I do remember, there were about 12 brothers and sisters waiting for their… Continue

I needed to do something besides just sitting around thinking...lately thinking only leads to one place and I'm all out of tears today...
So I went to my mind's journal and started remembering a conversation I had at the dinner table with my family last week...
The conversation went jokingly something like "dreadlocks...damn hippy...white girl...etc."
My defense for having dreadlocks, from day one, has been that dreads don't just belong to one culture. Most… Continue
