As the light of consciousness shines through these bodies, it's like sunlight shining through knotholes in a fence- it gets restricted, shaped and colored. All our personality and characteristics are shaped by the body, just as the beam of light is shaped by the knothole. But (just as the beam is light, not the knothole) we all, human and animal (and maybe plants) are the light, not the body. Every thing you know, all you have ever experienced, is consciousness.
My practice is to keep my knothole clean, unobstructed and wide open so as to let the light through- and eventually for my consciousness to find it's way back through the knothole so that, instead of this little, separate beam, I can just be the sunlight- as we all truly already are.
Let the light shine; that's where rainbows come from.
